Top five beers I've had recently

July 22, 2009 Leave a comment

“A man who lives in Milwaukee is judged by the beer he drinks.” — Author Philip Hamburger, in some literary work called An American Notebook.

FIREHOUSE PIZZA, Sheboygan Falls, Wis. — A happy little trip to my native state — Wisconsin — meant a number of great beers to add to the collection of those discussed in this little corner of the world-wide intertubes.

Wisconsin is known for a number of culinary treats, most of which can be very tasty, but, alas, not very good for you … cheese, bratwurst, potato salad, tortes, and, of course, beer.

Maybe it’s the German heritage cherished in much of the state. Perhaps it’s the festive attitudes of those who live there. Or, maybe it’s because Wisconsinites just need something to do during those long, bitter-cold and long winter months. Nevertheless, Wisconsin features some great beers. Some of which we’ll expound on here.

Top five beers I've had recently

(Photo taken by the girl I'm sorta-kinda seeing)

F.X. McRORY’S STEAK CHOP & OYSTER HOUSE, Seattle, Wash. — A recent trip to the great Northwest meant a cornucopia of new beers to enjoy.

Attempting to recall all the fresh fermented flavors was quite a challenge (it wasn’t like I was taking notes while out on the town trying to have a good time). But, what follows is a pretty good list of the hop highlights of the Seattle trip of 2009.

(Before we move on to this fresh list of five new beers enjoyed recently, Greatest beers of all time, and other stuff would like to give a heart-felt shout out to Tizley’s Europub of Poulsbo, Wash. Tizley’s offered an obscene amount of great beers, highlighted by an impressive list of brews from Germany, unofficial home of beer. You can see for yourself right here. It was awesome, and will be a necessary stop on the next trip to the greater Seattle area. Another shout out has to go to the White Horse Trading Company, a tiny little homey book-filled hole in the wall tucked away in an alley — Post Alley — near the world-famous Pike’s Place Market in Belltown. The White Horse had two to three beers on draft in real wood kegs, and three different kinds of Samuel Smith beer available in bottles.)

Top five new robots for 'Transformers 2'

June 15, 2009 3 comments

“It’s not trying to be the greatest movie on earth. It’s going to be the best action movie of the summer. Hands down, it will win that. But it’s not trying to be a Golden Globe-nominated film. It’s a badass popcorn summer movie.” — Über-hottie Megan Fox, on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Moviegoers are a week away from the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

We’ve just ordered our advance tickets for The Transformers IMAX experience (thank you very much, Moviefone), which sounds awesomely promising. A synopsis on said film retrieved from the Internets states, “Director Michael Bay has seamlessly integrated the IMAX footage with state-of-the-art CGI to create an unprecedented look and feel for this highly anticipated sequel.”

Sounds outrageously awesome.

In eager and giddy young kid-on-the-night-before-Christmas-like anticipation of this summer blockbuster theater event, Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff has a countdown of the top five robots Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff is looking forward to seeing in this sequel.

(Important note: No robot that appeared in the original Transformers flick from 2007 will be included. So, it’s all new robots in disguise here, which means these are either robots that were more than meets the eye in the trailers, or robots rumored to be a part of the film. Anyway, this should be fun.)

Let’s transform and roll out …

“A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” — Some Czech Proverb Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff found on the Internet.

SOUTH, Santa Monica — Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff drank beer yesterday. Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff will most likely drink beer again today.

With that fun in mind, here is a list of the top five beers Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff has had recently (not in any specific order, really; listed alphabetically, actually) …

Day off

July 16, 2008 Leave a comment

No game todayOf the 365 days in a calendar year (and one more bonus day in this very special leap year), only one is empty of any meaningful sporting event.

That is today, the day after baseball’s all-star game. No sports of note will take place on this unique day on the sports calendar (there are two WNBA games tonight, but we said “sports of note”).

For the record, today checks in at No. 10 on the list of Top 10 sports days of the year. Here’s a recap …

10. Day before/after baseball’s All-Star Game: There are 365 days in a calendar year (366 on those special Leap years, 2008 is included on that fun), and each contains some sort of sporting event. Err, actually, 363 days a year contain some sort of sporting event. This is actually a non-sports day entry in the greatest sports days of the year. The day before, and after, Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game contain no sports (we don’t count the home run contest —- held the day before the All-Star Game —- that’s just an exhibition). For those of us working in sports journalism, it gives us a much-needed breather.

O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He

June 20, 2008 1 comment

“Happiness belongs to the self-sufficient.” — Some wise guy named Aristotle.

Smart guy Cliff Arnall has come up with a doozy of a mathematical formula that determines that June 20 (today!) is the happiest day of the year.

It’s true.

Arnall — who works as a psychologist at the University of Cardiff in Wales, U.K. — devised an elaborate equation that looks like this …

E = mc2

Just kidding about that … LOL! LMAO! LOL! :-)

Here’s the real mathematical formula for happiness …

O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He

O is time spent outdoors.

N is time spent in nature.

S is more socialization in the summer.

Cpm relates to positive memories of childhood summers.

T factors in temperature.

He is vacation anticipation.

The formula also has determined that the third Monday of January is the most unhappiest day of the year.

But, let’s not look at this with a glass-half-empty approach. I’m going to enjoy this day, starting with a visit to my favorite local pizza parlor.

Have a happy day!
