NFL Week 15 picks

December 14, 2011 1 comment

Happy holidays! Here are some football picks …

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Broncos over Patriots. The Interwebs would explode from happiness if Tim Tebow led the Broncos to Super Bowl XLVI and played an undefeated Packers team.

Lock of the week: Packers over Chiefs. Yes, I know I picked the Pack as my “Lock of the week” last week, but this isn’t a suicide pool, I reserve the right to choose any team any amount of times I please, especially if it’s the Packers. The Packers — unless, all of a sudden and without any notice, Mike McCarthy turns all Jim Caldwell on us — are likely going to overwhelm a Chiefs team that fired its coach this week and will welcome a new, even-less-experienced-than-the-previous quarterback into the huddle (Dec. 16 update: Kyle Orton will start, not Ricky Stanzi). New coach + inexperienced QB making start / undefeated Packers = well, it doesn’t really add up, but you get the idea that it’s not good for KC.

NFL Week 10 picks

November 9, 2011 1 comment

A lasting remnant of the lockout — a week without byes sandwiched between bye weeks — helps give Week 10 some added punch. Let’s get to it, since this week kicks off with the first of the Thursday nighters …

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Broncos over Chiefs. Hate on Tim Tebow all you want, but he’s 2-3 as a starter and has the Broncos sitting just a game behind the 4-4 logjam of mediocrity atop the AFC West. That might not be saying much, but nobody really expected anything out of Denver this season. However, here we are entering the second half of the season and the Broncos are right in the thick of the race. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are coming off a humbling loss to the previously winless Dolphins.

Lock of the week: Ravens over Seahawks. The Ravens are in the midst of what promises to be an exciting race for the AFC North title. The Ravens currently sit at No. 4 in the AFC playoff picture, with the upstart Bengals leading the division. The Ravens host the Bengals in Week 11, so going into that important game carrying on the momentum from the thrilling win in Pittsburgh last week through the game in Seattle is paramount.

Lock of the week record: 7-2

NFL Week 4 picks

September 28, 2011 1 comment

Football is fun, so let’s just get to the picks …

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Panthers over Bears. It was tempting — very, very tantalizingly tempting — to pick “tha Raidas!” here to push over the Patriots at home at the O.co. However, the Patriots just don’t lose consecutive games, and they figure to be ready for redemption after the historic setback in Buffalo. Instead, we’re picking Cam Newton’s Panthers — fresh off their first win of the season — to collect a second consecutive win and do so at Soldier Field against the Bears. This would be a startling development, but, hey, “any given Sunday,” “that’s why they play the game” and all that jazz helps fuel these “anything can happen” sort of picks. It’s worked so far this season, to the tune of a 2-1 start to the “upset special o’ the week” picks.

Lock of the week presented by the official Twitter page of Murder Killingfield: Packers over Broncos. The Broncos famously upset the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII (some highlights, more lowlights). This is one of the lowest moments in sports fandom for Rhino’s Sports Pub; a horrible, despicable day that still brings a measured amount of sorrow. To be quite frank, there isn’t much love for the Broncos at Rhino’s Sports Pub. That being said, we attempt to be as objective as possible here — while still having a little fun, you know. The Broncos just aren’t that good, and while we’d like to see something in the neighborhood of 41-6 haymaker the Packers unleashed on the Broncos the season before that unfortunate event in San Diego, it’s still hard to imagine the Broncos going into Lambeau Field and coming out with a victory over the defending Super Bowl champions.

Mock draft version 3.1.1: The one in which Dareus is the top overall pick

April 15, 2011 1 comment

Please keep in mind that this was put together without the consultation of …

1. NFL scouts
2. NFL pro player personnel people
3. NFL anybody

We’re just matching up player with team based on that team’s most glaring needs.

Everybody and their grandma has Cam Newton at No. 1 to the Carolina Panthers and Marcell Dareus going No. 2 overall to the Denver Broncos. Let’s throw a monkey wrench (great Foo Fighters tune, by the way) into that whole scenario right here. Respect …

1. Carolina Panthers — Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

2. Denver Broncos — Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina

3. Buffalo Bills — Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

4. Cincinnati Bengals — Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

5. Arizona Cardinals — Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M

6. Cleveland Browns — A.J. Green, WR, Georgia

7. San Francisco 49ers — Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

8. Tennessee Titans — Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

9. Dallas Cowboys — Tyron Smith, OT, USC

10. Washington Redskins — Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

11. Houston Texans — J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

12. Minnesota Vikings — Cameron Jordan, DE, California

13. Detroit Lions — Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

14. St. Louis Rams — Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri

15. Miami Dolphins — Mike Pouncey, C/G, Florida

16. Jacksonville Jaguars — Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

17. New England Patriots (from Oakland Raiders) — Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

18. San Diego Chargers — Akeem Ayers, LB, UCLA

19. New York Giants — Anthony Castonzo, OL, Boston College

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

21. Kansas City Chiefs — Phil Taylor, DL, Baylor

22. Indianapolis Colts — Nate Solder, OL, Colorado

23. Philadelphia Eagles — Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

24. New Orleans Saints — Cam Heyward, DT, Ohio State

25. Seattle Seahawks — Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois

26. Baltimore Ravens — Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland

27. Atlanta Falcons — Justin Houston, LB, Georgia

28. New England Patriots — Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

29. Chicago Bears — Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State

30. New York Jets — Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple

31. Pittsburgh Steelers — Danny Watkins, OT, Baylor

32. Green Bay Packers — Brooks Reed, LB, Arizona

That being said, I’m kinda on board with what NFL.com’s Pat Kirwan projected in his latest mock draft, which had a number of teams late in the first round accepting trades out from teams desperate for quarterback help. That run on the second-tier QBs will come earlier than many are expecting.

Greatest Super Bowl blowouts

February 2, 2011 Leave a comment

Here’s to hoping that Super Bowl XLV isn’t on this list. Unless, of course, the Green Bay Packers are the victors, then it’s cool. Maybe even encouraged …

1. Super Bowl XXIV: San Francisco 49ers 55, Denver Broncos 10
2. Super Bowl XXVII: Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17
3. Super Bowl XXIX: San Francisco 49ers 49, San Diego Chargers 26
4. Super Bowl XX: Chicago Bears 46, New England Patriots 10
5. Super Bowl XXXVII: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48, Oakland Raiders 21

Top 10 conference championship games

“Then run it and let’s get the hell out of here.” — Vince Lombardi to Packers QB Bart Starr, moments before Starr scored the game-winning touchdown in the famous “Ice Bowl.”

In the days building up to what is arguably football’s greatest day — conference championship Sunday — it’s appropriate to bust out this list of the top 10 greatest conference championship games played in the Super Bowl era:

My ugliest NFL uniforms power rankings

December 14, 2010 Leave a comment

1. Cincinnati Bengals — There’s nothing this team can do to make their uniforms look good (well, aside from getting a new team nickname and all news colors).

2. Carolina Panthers — Real men don’t wear teal; or goofy-striped pants.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars — Again, teal is so 1993. Maybe moving this team to Los Angeles will help change its image.

4. New England Patriots — The team’s awesome throwback uniforms make its current gear appear even more awful.

5. Denver Broncos — These uniforms weren’t cool when the team made the switch in 1997, and they’re even less cool now. The only redeeming quality of the Broncos’ current look are the helmets, which are quite nice.

NFL Week 2 picks: Let’s try to do better this time

September 17, 2010 3 comments

‘Twas the night before the first Sunday of the NFL season …

“So, who’s going to win the Super Bowl?” I was asked as I was about to leave a party.

“The Colts!” I said confidently.

“Please tell me that the Patriots aren’t going to win the Super Bowl,” another person inquired.

“They won’t!” I bombastically proclaimed.

A little more than five minutes of play into Sunday’s action and a bubble screen later, the Patriots scored the first touchdown of the day and, also the first of what would be many scores in a 38-24 rout of the visiting Bengals (yup, the same Bengals team that I predicted would pull off the upset of Week 1. I went so far as to write, and I reluctantly quote, “Is this even really an upset? Well, the game is in Foxborough, and the Patriots are favored to win. However, the Patriots are in decline.”). Oops!

My Super Bowl pick? Well, the Colts were on the wrong end of a 231-yard, three-touchdown rushing performance by then-unheralded back Arian Foster in a 34-24 loss (sometimes, tallies on the scoreboard are not as close as they may appear).

That set the tone for what was a wildly fantastically unpredictable Week 1. Who would have guessed that the Chiefs — perennial pushover for the title contending Chargers — would pull off the week’s biggest upset? Certainly not Rhino’s Sports Pub and Bacon Eatery.

Well, Week 2 could present some more surprises.
