There is no NFL team that has been a part of more signature moments than the Oakland Raiders, individual plays so colossal that a simple nickname sparks endless debate around events that have stood the test of time.

In the epic conclusion of this year’s season of “A Football Life,” the most famous play in NFL history gets further investigation 40 years after it occurred. 1976 Raiders voted greatest NFL team ever

March 30, 2012 Leave a comment

The 1976 Oakland Raiders knocked the competition around and upside down, laughing now that they’ve conquered and won.

Pillaging just for fun in NFL.com’s version of March Madness was the rough-and-tumble team of Hall of Fame coach John Madden that originally found its ultimate glory during professional football’s romping-stomping 1970s heyday.

NFL Week 14 picks

December 7, 2011 1 comment

I’ve already said too much …

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Panthers over Falcons. While the Falcons are fighting to stay in the NFC wild-card picture, the improving Panthers are the team nobody wants to play right now. Cam Newton has broken a 35-year-old record set by Steve Grogan for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback and will continue a late push for Rookie of the Year honors.

Lock of the week: Packers over Raiders. It’s too easy to pick the Ravens over the Colts (I’ve also vowed to never pick the Ravens as a “Lock of the week” … ever!). So, that leaves us with the Packers, winners of 18 consecutive games (counting games played at the end of last season and playoffs), returning home to comfy/cold Lambeau Field against the Raiders team that got depantsed by the Dolphins. Green Bay appears set to move to 13-0, inch closer to home-field advantage in the NFC and continue to answer questions surrounding resting players at end of regular season or going for a perfect season.

NFL Week 13 picks

November 30, 2011 Leave a comment

“Hopes that were high in the heat of September … can wilt and die in the chill of November. November can be cold and grey, November can be surly with with bitter rain upon the world and winter coming early.” — John Facenda, of NFL Films (Official site | Blog | On Hulu).

November has given way to December, and the previous month exposed some clear-cut contenders (Bears, Cowboys, Falcons, Ravens, just to name a few), a bunch of pretenders (Bills, Buccaneers, Chargers, Chiefs, just to name a few) and a few teams left in the hunt for coveted playoff spots (Bengals, Broncos, Giants, Jets, Lions, Titans, just to name a few). Here are the picks for this week’s pro football action …

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Raiders over Dolphins. This, apparently, would be considered an upset, according to oddsmakers, who — quite frankly — I pay very little attention to. But, the Dolphins have put together a nice run after an 0-8 start, and figure to provide quite a contest for the Raiders, who are attempting to fight off a sudden threat by the Tim Tebow-led Broncos.

Lock of the week: Patriots over Colts. Once upon a time, this was a huge rivalry game, a showdown of AFC heavyweights fighting for playoff positioning of the highest order. A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to a promising Week 13 matchup that, when the schedule was made in April, figured to be a classic late-season squabble between longtime combatants: Peyton Manning would miss every game on the road from Week 1 to the early December matchup. Now, a winless Colts team visits Foxborough, where the local pro football team is still vying for a top AFC playoff seed.

Who are the scariest NFLers of all time?

Amazed that my dominating, terrifying, intimidating, ominous career with the Raiders is being properly recognized by the great annotator Adam Rank of the National Football League website: NFL’s all-time scariest players

There’s no way Jack Lambert deserves a spot on this “scariest” manifest preceding myself. On account of his missing teeth? I eat wild boar bacon, wrapped in bear beef, stuffed inside an ogre for breakfast. Not living in the past. Live in the now. Going to hunt some wildebeest.

NFL Week 6 picks

October 12, 2011 4 comments

Weeks 1-4 went well as far as picks are concerned. Week 5? Not so much. Here’s to hoping we experience a bounce-back week at the Rhino’s Sports Lodge and Bacon Bistro

Five-star upset special o’ the week: Browns over Raiders. This could be a classic case of the emotional letdown for the Raiders, who pulled off a thrilling, emotional win over the Houston Texans in Week 5 a day after the passing of Al Davis. The Browns, meanwhile, are coming off a bye week. The last time the Browns played after a week off of play? Well, Cleveland pulled off one of 2010′s greatest upsets, administering a 34-14 haymaker to the New England Patriots.

Lock of the week presented by the official Twitter page of Murder Killingfield: Packers over Rams. Unstoppable force meets movable object at Lambeau Field. The Packers are unbeaten, the Rams are beaten. Even with the Rams coming off the bye week and the Packers facing some injury woes — Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins out for the year, Pro Bowl left tackle Chad Clifton out with a hamstring injury — it’s hard to imagine a team that has been struggling so much pulling out a shocker over the champs, who are coming off their most impressive victory of the season.

2011 overall record: 53-24 (.688 winning percentage)
Five-star upset special record: 2-3
Lock of the week presented by the official Twitter page of Murder Killingfield record: 4-1 (last week, I expounded on how much shame I would feel if I missed on one of these picks. Well, it happened — thank you very little, New York Football Giants. Do I feel shame? Yes, but not nearly as much as the Giants should feel for Sunday’s debacle. I will remember what you did.)

Al Davis: An icon of Raiders domination

(Editor’s note: Contributor Murder Killingfield may and/or may not have played for the Oakland Raiders from 1967-80 as a lineman.)

Today, there was a great disturbance in Raiders Nation, the most superior of all football nations. We lost a true deity and commander.

The call from Sistrunk came today at 6 p.m.

Otis Sistrunk is an old, loyal comrade, and one of the few I still remain in contact with from my time with the Oakland Raiders, team of the decades and the most awesome machine of destruction ever unleashed on a football field. That is truth and any mindless fool who would dare suggest otherwise will be hunted down by myself and face a gruesome punishment.

The architect of the most awesome machine of football destruction was Alibastor “Al” Davis, to many an evil sorcerer and renegade recluse who attempted to take down the NFL on multiple occasions, to me the most genius, authentic and righteous man alive.

Sistrunk’s call came as a surprise. I was surprisingly sober for this juncture of the day so the news would be unrelenting to my soul.

Alibastor Davis had passed away. I ran outside of my secluded compound here in the nether regions of Turkiye — once upon a time the home of my ancient ancestors for several millennia during the Ottoman Empire and now my approved native land — clenched my fists and screamed at the top of my lungs, “Noooooooooooooooo!”

The foliage around my feet blew away.

Frightened birds flew from the trees.

Small animals scattered in fear from their hideouts in the brush.

A brave — yet foolish — eurasian lynx darted toward me. It thought I would be its next meal. It was sadly mistaken. As the eurasian lynx lunged at me, I took my clenched fists and crushed its skull. That was dinner.

Living in the Turkish nether regions is not forgiving, and I apply much of what I learned from Alibastor Davis to survive in this merciless environment.

“You don’t adjust. You just dominate.”

Now I storm through the countryside with that same voracious appetite to devour victims, to feed on the weak, that decades ago served me so well as I became one of the greatest Raiders players in history.

“We’re going to take what we want. That’s Raider football.”

Tonight, I drink double the moonshine as my normal intake, in your honor Alibastor Davis, my old friend.

The Autumn wind is a (expletive) pirate (expletive)

(Expletive) Blustering in from (expletive) sea

With a (expletive) rollicking (expletive) song he (expletive) sweeps (expletive) along

(Expletive) Swaggering (expletive) boisterously.

Just win baby.

Seabass’ record-tying 63-yard reminiscent of 76-yard attempt

September 12, 2011 Leave a comment

Sebastian Janikowski’s record-tying 63-yarder against the Broncos brings to mind the time when then-Raiders coach trotted Seabass out for a 76-yard field goal attempt in 2009 …

Just two days later, Al Davis hosted a bizarre press conference announcing that Kiffin was fired for cause.
