2010 World Cup pub tour: South

Pub: South

Location: Santa Monica

Match: USA 1-2 Ghana

Crowd: High on hope and fueled by fermented beverages, the American soccer bandwagon filled up and a raucous crowd gathered at South and packed the place (and, by reports, many, many other bars). Unfortunately, the Red, White and Blue could not build on the euphoria of the win over Algeria just three days earlier. The loss was disappointing given the momentum the team had built and the way the knock-out bracket unfolded. On paper, it appeared the US of A could have a nice, long run in the World Cup, perhaps even to the semifinals where they could conceivably face up against Brazil. Well, not to drag out a tired, old cliche, but “that’s why they play the game.” More teams miss on these perceived great opportunities than capitalize on them. That’s just the way sports work.

Pub: South

Location: Santa Monica

Match: Ghana 0-1 Germany

Crowd: There were still some patrons left over from the epic USA win over Algeria, which ended a couple hours before Germany-Ghana kicked off. I admired their enthusiasm to continue to relish the great victory at such an early time … on a Wednesday. Great spirit shown by all. The icing on the proverbial cake was Germany’s victory over Ghana, which clinched the top spot in Group D for Die Mannschaft.

Pub: South

Location: Santa Monica

Match: Cameroon 1-2 Denmark

Crowd: Decidedly not nearly crowded as it was for the USA-England game a week earlier, South still was featuring the World Cup games on virtually every TV in the place — which is significant given that South has an HDTV in every corner no matter where you look.

Something to look forward to.

Pub: South

Location: Santa Monica

Match: England 1-1 USA

Crowd: It was the most anticipated match in USA soccer history, and the bar owners and crowd on hand responded tremendously. Despite not being known as a “soccer bar,” South wound up being jam packed with red, white and blue-clad fanatics. With the patrons singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and chanting “USA! USA! USA!”, it turned out to be an extremely memorable afternoon of watching football.

We arrived more than two hours before game time to find that there was a table reserved for us.

The breakfast of champions.

So ready for game time!

A good crowd begins to gather in the moments before the start of the match.

South is packed as the USA takes on England in their much-anticipated World Cup encounter.

“A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” — Some Czech Proverb Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff found on the Internet.

SOUTH, Santa Monica — Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff drank beer yesterday. Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff will most likely drink beer again today.

With that fun in mind, here is a list of the top five beers Greatest Pro Bowls of all time, and other stuff has had recently (not in any specific order, really; listed alphabetically, actually) …
